Success or Happiness at Work? Or Both?

Who are the most successful people you know? Who are the happiest? I ask these questions a lot. The answers are quite sobering, because rarely are the same people on both lists.

Which list do you want to be on? At what cost? Think carefully, because your answers tap into the very essence of what matters most to you. They also point out just what you’re willing to tolerate and sacrifice in pursuit of your goals.

Being clear on what you really want — and what you’re willing to do or forego to get it — is a necessary prerequisite for creating success on your own terms.

What if you were to be on both lists — happy and successful? Striking the ideal balance between success and happiness may be uncommon, but it is possible. What would be different for you if you had both? What would be different for your family? What might be possible then, that isn't today?

The question then becomes: What are you doing to make it a reality? If the answer is ʺnot muchʺ, then maybe you need to rethink just how important those things are to you.

If you decide that you really do want that elusive but idyllic balance of success and happiness, and you’re prepared to do what it takes to have it, there’s no time like the present to get going!
